SANTA MARIA NAVARRESE
Between the Supramonte and the sea
Santa Maria Navarrese, a hamlet of the municipality of Baunei, in the heart of Ogliastra, is a village of about 1,400 inhabitants on the central-eastern coast of the island, near enchanting places such as Cala Goloritzè, Cala Mariolu and Cala Sisine, characterised by romantic narrow streets close to the sea and a small marina with typical restaurants and open-air bars.
It is said that the village and the charming church of Santa Maria di Navarra, dating back to the 11th century and today considered the oldest monument in the area, owe their name to the princess of Navarra who, following a shipwreck, managed to land in this cove and, as a sign of thanks and gratitude to the Virgin Mary, decided to have the first church in the place built.
The area, with its long beaches of changing colours, wild nature and insurmountable rocky bastions, provides the opportunity to venture along different itineraries that lead to unforgettable and scenic places, ideal especially for hiking and trekking enthusiasts.
